My Best Friend in the Kitchen

For decades, I was what you would call a casual baker. Raising my two daughters, I loved baking cookies for them when time allowed, and baked the birthday cakes when needed. It wasn’t until after I retired from teaching that I took a little-known dream and made it into a reality. I became a cottage baker and started a business: Up North Mini Cakes.

I recently published a post naming my Top 10 Essential Baking Tools. Today, I’d like to focus on one of those tools in particular, something I didn’t even own until a couple of years ago, and now something I don’t want to ever bake without!

She’s a beauty, isn’t she? I know. The KitchenAid Stand Mixer has been around since 1919. There’s something so retro and nostalgic about it, and yet modern. Why did it take me so long to own one? It’s something I’ll never fully understand. She comes in well over 20 colors, which is one of the appeals. You can choose the exact right color that fits in your kitchen.

The stand mixer I own for my Mini Cake Baking Cottage Business is like the one above: a KitchenAid Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, KSM150PS. For the price, this size is perfect for me. There are larger sizes, including a 7-quart, which works even better for those bakers who baker in larger batches. I try to keep it simple and not get overwhelmed with too much at any given time.

Is it an inventment? Yes. It is worth it? A hearty yes. Having a powerful, hands-free stand mixer makes your baking so much easier. I considered it a start-up cost when I began my business and I never looked back. I hope you feel the same.

Stay Tuned! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sending you exclusive tips on navigating cottage food laws, pricing your bakes for profit, and giving you a sneak peek of my upcoming ebook, Love At First [Mini] Bite: Mastering Mini Cakes and Building a Sweet Side Hustle. Yes, I have honed in on this baking niche, and will share everything I know. The joy of baking? You can try anything and everything on your new adventure. I’ll be here to help!

Happy Baking!
