The Sweet Tradition of the Giving Plate

A Beautiful Way to “Bake It Forward”

There’s something incredibly meaningful about homemade food shared from one kitchen to another.

That’s the heart behind the Giving Plate — a simple but beautiful tradition where baked goods are lovingly placed on a special plate, gifted to someone else, and then passed along again with another homemade treat.

It’s kindness in motion.

Some Giving Plates are designed for everyday encouragement, while others celebrate the holidays with seasonal messages, festive colors, or cozy winter themes, like this Pfaltzgraff Winterberry 12 Days Plate of Sharing . No matter the style, they all carry the same purpose: to spread comfort, connection, and generosity through homemade goodness.

Under the umbrella of Baking It Forward, a Giving Plate becomes more than a serving dish. It becomes:

  • a gesture of encouragement
  • a reminder that someone is thinking of you
  • a way to slow down and create meaningful connection
  • a tradition that keeps kindness moving from home to home

Imagine dropping off warm banana bread to a neighbor recovering from illness… homemade cookies for a teacher… or muffins for a friend going through a difficult season. The plate quietly says:

And perhaps the most beautiful part?
The kindness doesn’t stop there.

The recipient refills the plate with another homemade treat and shares it with someone new — creating a ripple effect of warmth, thoughtfulness, and community.

In a world that often feels disconnected, the Giving Plate reminds us that small acts of kindness still matter. Sometimes all it takes is flour, sugar, and the willingness to share something made with love.

Baking it Forward: How Sharing Homemade Treats can Nourish Mental Health

There’s something special about baking for someone else.

Not for a holiday.
Not for a business.
Not for social media perfection.

Just because.

In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, the simple act of baking something homemade and giving it away can become a quiet form of healing — both for the giver and the receiver.

Why “Baking It Forward” Matters

Acts of kindness have been scientifically linked to improved mental health, reduced stress, and increased feelings of happiness and connection. When we intentionally do something thoughtful for another person, our brains release feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin — the same chemicals associated with joy and emotional wellness.

And baking adds an extra layer to that experience.

Baking is already calming on its own. The measuring, mixing, kneading, and decorating encourage mindfulness and creativity. But when those homemade treats are shared, baking becomes something even deeper: a way to create comfort, connection, and community.

The Power of a Giving Plate

One of the most beautiful examples of this idea is a Giving Plate.

A Giving Plate is more than just a dish. It becomes a traveling act of kindness.

The idea is simple:
You bake something homemade, place it on the plate, and gift it to someone — a neighbor, friend, teacher, coworker, or family member. Then that person fills the plate with something homemade and passes it along to someone else.

The plate keeps moving.
So does the kindness.

Your plate beautifully captures that spirit:

“Wherever it may go, with each new sharing of its gift, the love and blessings grow.”

What a meaningful reminder that kindness multiplies when it’s shared.

Baking Creates Emotional Connection

Homemade food carries emotion in a way store-bought items often can’t.

A plate of cookies says:
“I was thinking of you.”

Banana bread dropped off at a neighbor’s house says:
“You matter.”

A small box of muffins for a struggling friend quietly says:
“You’re not alone.”

These moments may seem small, but they can have lasting emotional impact — especially in seasons when people feel isolated, overwhelmed, or unseen.

Why Giving Helps the Giver Too

Interestingly, generosity doesn’t just help the recipient.

People who regularly engage in acts of giving often experience:

  • Reduced feelings of loneliness
  • Greater life satisfaction
  • Lower stress levels
  • Increased feelings of purpose
  • Stronger social connection
  • Improved mood and emotional resilience

Sometimes healing begins when we stop focusing only inward and begin creating warmth for others. This wonderful book explain it all: The Hidden Gifts of Helping: How the Power of Giving, Compassion, and Hope Can Get Us Through Hard Times by Stephen G. Post.

Simple “Baking It Forward” Ideas

You don’t have to do anything elaborate. Often, the simplest gestures mean the most.

Try:

  • Delivering cookies to an elderly neighbor
  • Leaving muffins for a teacher or nurse
  • Bringing bread to a new family in town
  • Starting a Giving Plate tradition with friends
  • Creating small porch-drop treat boxes
  • Hosting a “Bake & Share” afternoon with children or grandchildren
  • Including handwritten encouragement notes with baked goods

More Than Dessert

At its heart, Baking It Forward isn’t really about cookies or cakes.

It’s about slowing down enough to create something with your hands… and choosing to use it to brighten someone else’s day.

And in the process, you may discover it brightens yours too.

Because sometimes the sweetest form of self-care is sharing it.

So You Love to Bake? GOOD for YOU….

The Unexpected Health Benefits of Baking

In a busy world filled with noise, deadlines, and endless scrolling, baking offers something surprisingly powerful: calm.

For many people, baking is more than simply making dessert. It’s therapy, creativity, comfort, and mindfulness all rolled into one warm kitchen experience. Whether you’re whipping up cookies on a rainy afternoon or decorating cupcakes for a special occasion, baking can positively impact your overall well-being in ways you may not expect.

Baking Reduces Stress

One of the biggest benefits of baking is the calming effect it has on the mind. Measuring ingredients, following steps, and focusing on a recipe naturally encourages mindfulness — helping quiet anxious thoughts and shift attention away from daily stressors.

The repetitive motions of stirring, kneading, frosting, or rolling dough can feel almost meditative. Many people describe baking as a mental “reset button.”

It Encourages Creativity

Baking also gives adults something we often forget we need: creative play.

Choosing flavors, decorating cakes, experimenting with colors, or trying new recipes stimulates the creative parts of the brain. Creative hobbies are linked to improved mood, lower stress levels, and increased feelings of happiness and accomplishment.

Even simple baking projects can provide a satisfying sense of purpose.

Baking Creates Joyful Connection

Food has always brought people together. Sharing homemade treats with family, neighbors, coworkers, or friends creates meaningful moments of connection.

A plate of cookies or a homemade cake says something simple but powerful:
“I thought of you.” I adore this Giving Plate for a beautiful idea that keeps the love moving forward!

Acts of giving and sharing are proven to boost emotional wellness — for both the giver and the receiver.

It Builds Confidence

There’s something deeply rewarding about pulling a beautiful loaf of bread or tray of cupcakes from the oven.

Baking gives tangible results. You can see your progress, learn new skills, and improve over time. That sense of accomplishment can boost confidence and create positive momentum in other areas of life as well.

A Gentle Escape From Screens

Baking also offers a healthy break from constant technology and digital overload. Instead of staring at notifications and emails, you’re working with your hands, engaging your senses, and being fully present in the moment.

The smell of cinnamon, warm vanilla, or fresh bread alone can create feelings of comfort and nostalgia.

More Than Just Dessert

At its heart, baking is about slowing down.

It reminds us that not everything has to be rushed. Sometimes wellness looks less like perfection and more like flour on the counter, music in the background, and something delicious rising in the oven.

So the next time you bake, remember: You may be making something sweet — but you’re also doing something genuinely good for yourself.

My Best Friend in the Kitchen

For decades, I was what you would call a casual baker. Raising my two daughters, I loved baking cookies for them when time allowed, and baked the birthday cakes when needed. It wasn’t until after I retired from teaching that I took a little-known dream and made it into a reality. I became a cottage baker and started a business: Up North Mini Cakes.

I recently published a post naming my Top 10 Essential Baking Tools. Today, I’d like to focus on one of those tools in particular, something I didn’t even own until a couple of years ago, and now something I don’t want to ever bake without!

She’s a beauty, isn’t she? I know. The KitchenAid Stand Mixer has been around since 1919. There’s something so retro and nostalgic about it, and yet modern. Why did it take me so long to own one? It’s something I’ll never fully understand. She comes in well over 20 colors, which is one of the appeals. You can choose the exact right color that fits in your kitchen.

The stand mixer I own for my Mini Cake Baking Cottage Business is like the one above: a KitchenAid Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, KSM150PS. For the price, this size is perfect for me. There are larger sizes, including a 7-quart, which works even better for those bakers who baker in larger batches. I try to keep it simple and not get overwhelmed with too much at any given time.

Is it an inventment? Yes. It is worth it? A hearty yes. Having a powerful, hands-free stand mixer makes your baking so much easier. I considered it a start-up cost when I began my business and I never looked back. I hope you feel the same.

Stay Tuned! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sending you exclusive tips on navigating cottage food laws, pricing your bakes for profit, and giving you a sneak peek of my upcoming ebook, Love At First [Mini] Bite: Mastering Mini Cakes and Building a Sweet Side Hustle. Your Essential Cottage Baking Tools

Welcome to Your Baking Journey! Starting a cottage bakery doesn’t require industrial machinery or a massive budget. By focusing on just a few high-quality, intentional tools, you can strip away the kitchen clutter, save hundreds of dollars, and find your baking calm. These are the exact 10 tools I rely on every single week in my home kitchen.

🔲 1. A Kitchen Mixer

The Reality: If you can afford it, a kitchen stand mixer (such as a KitchenAid, Cuisinart, or Hamilton Beach) is a fantastic investment for hands-free mixing. My Go-To Tip: Don’t let a budget stop you! A quality electric hand mixer will definitely work and can get your business off the ground perfectly.

🔲 2. Flexible Silicone Spatulas

Why it matters: Every scrap of batter left behind in a bowl is lost profit over time.

My Go-To Tip: Opt for sturdy, flexible silicone that lets you scrape down the absolute bottom and sides of your mixing bowls cleanly.

🔲 3. Quality Measuring Cups & Spoons

Why it matters: You will be holding and using these every single time you bake, so ergonomics matter.

My Go-To Tip: Choose a durable set of nesting cups and spoons that literally “feel good to you” in your hands. Comfort makes long baking days joyful.

🔲 4. A Basic Set of Piping Tips

Why it matters: You don’t need a massive collection to look professional. A few classic shapes do all the heavy lifting.

My Go-To Tip: Make sure your starter set includes a 1M and a 2D tip. These are the absolute industry standard for effortless, beautiful bakery swirls.

🔲 5. Piping Bags

Why it matters: Hand-spreading frosting takes too long and looks uneven; piping ensures speed, consistency, and clean edges.

My Go-To Tip: Keep both disposable bags (for quick cleanup) or heavy-duty reusable bags on hand depending on your kitchen workflow.

🔲 6. Cupcake Tins

Why it matters: A classic, versatile staple for any home baker.

My Go-To Tip: Use standard 12-cup muffin tins to bake your base batches efficiently and keep your portion sizes perfectly uniform.

🔲 7. A Bundt Pan

Why it matters: Bundt cakes add instant elegance to your menu with zero complicated decorating skills required.

My Go-To Tip: Look for a heavy-cast pan with defined ridges to give your cakes a striking, professional silhouette right out of the oven.

🔲 8. Mini Cake Pans

Why it matters: The physical foundation of your entire signature mini-cake brand identity.

My Go-To Tip: I highly recommend the Aluminum Foil Rectangular Mini Cake Pans with Lids and Spoons (6.8oz). These fun pans come in different colors, and the ‘sporks’ add convenience to the customer – a big seller.

🔲 9. Cake Cooling Racks

Why it matters: Elevating hot bakes allows air to circulate completely underneath, preventing soggy bottoms.

My Go-To Tip: Transfer your mini cakes to the wire rack shortly after baking so they cool evenly without sweating in the hot pans.

🔲 10. Cookie Sheets

Why it matters: The ultimate kitchen workhorse for catching drips, holding individual pans, and organizing your bakes.

My Go-To Tip: Be sure to have enough of these cookie sheets with covers on hand. I use for many of the steps in my mini cake baking business.

What’s Your Next Step? Now that you have the tools, it’s time to build your dream! Keep an eye on your email inbox. Creativity Is Self-Care for the Soul

Finding Calm Through Creative Hobbies

There’s something deeply comforting about creating with our hands.

In a world that often feels rushed, noisy, and overwhelming, creative hobbies invite us to slow down. Whether it’s baking something homemade, making a handmade card, watercolor painting, knitting, journaling, or simply sitting quietly with a creative project, these small moments can bring a surprising sense of peace.

For many of us, creativity isn’t about perfection or talent. It’s about finding space to breathe again.

Over the years, I’ve realized that some of my calmest moments happen when I’m fully focused on creating something simple. The worries of the day quiet down a little. My mind becomes less cluttered. Time slows down. Even a short creative break can feel restorative in a way that scrolling on a phone never quite does.

Creative hobbies can also support emotional wellness in gentle but meaningful ways. They encourage mindfulness, focus, and a sense of accomplishment. Working with our hands helps us step outside of constant mental noise and reconnect with something slower and more grounding.

There are even physical benefits to creativity. Many people find that creative activities help reduce stress, lower anxiety, improve concentration, and create a stronger sense of emotional balance. Quiet hobbies can also encourage better rest and help us feel more connected to ourselves again.

One thing I love most about creative hobbies is that there’s no “right way” to begin. You don’t need expensive supplies or a perfectly organized craft room. You simply need a small willingness to start.

Some gentle ways to begin again might be:

  • baking a favorite family recipe
  • making a simple handmade card
  • spending ten quiet minutes journaling
  • trying watercolor paints
  • organizing a cozy creative corner in your home
  • reading an inspiring creativity book with a warm cup of tea nearby

A few books that have inspired me on this journey include:

  • Creative First Aid: The Science and Joy of Creativity for Mental Health This inspiring book empowers you with awareness and simple creative tools that can open a door to experiencing delight, awe and joy each and every day. [View on Amazon]
  • Artist is a Verb: A Daily Reader to Support You in Building a Creative Practice and Inspired Life This book will be a companion for life for anyone who wants to begin or keep going on a creative journey. [View on Amazon]
  • MEGA Creativity: How to Solve Problems, Make Art, and Change Your World. Creativity is invention, imagination, and innovation – learn how to harness it. [View on Amazon]
  • The Creative Cure The perfect self-help book for our handmade, homemade, crafting culture [View on Amazon]

Sometimes inspiration begins simply by hearing someone else remind us that creativity still belongs in our lives.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or disconnected from the things that once brought you joy, I hope this encourages you to make room for creativity again — even in very small ways.

You don’t have to create something perfect.

You only have to begin.

And sometimes, that first quiet creative moment is exactly where we start finding the calm again.

Welcome to Finding the Calm

There are seasons in life when everything feels loud, rushed, and overwhelming. In the middle of busy days and endless responsibilities, it can be easy to forget how important it is to slow down and make space for the things that bring us peace.

Finding the Calm was created as a gentle reminder that calm doesn’t always come from big changes. Sometimes it’s found in the quiet moments — baking something homemade in the kitchen, creating with paper and stamps, lighting a candle at the end of a long day, or simply allowing ourselves time to breathe.

This little corner of the internet is a place for cozy creativity, simple self-care, and the kinds of everyday routines that help life feel softer and more grounded.

Here you’ll find:

  • cozy baking inspiration
  • papercrafting ideas and favorite supplies
  • gentle self-care and slow living encouragement
  • simple tools and products that make everyday life feel a little easier
  • creative ways to reconnect with calm through hobbies and home

My hope is that this space feels warm, welcoming, and encouraging — never perfect, never overwhelming, and always real.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing cozy baking inspiration, creative hobbies, simple self-care ideas, and favorite tools that help make everyday life feel a little calmer.

Whether you’re here for creative inspiration, cozy ideas, or simply a quiet moment in your day, I’m so glad you found your way here.
