“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”

Reading Before Bed
The end of the day often arrives faster than we’d like.
One minute we’re finishing dinner, answering one last email, or tidying the kitchen…
…and before we know it, we’re scrolling through our phones, wondering where the evening went.
I’ve discovered that ending the day with a good book creates a completely different kind of evening.
Reading slows us down.
It gives our minds permission to leave behind schedules, worries, and endless notifications.
Whether it’s ten minutes or half an hour, reading before bed has become one of my favorite ways to gently close the day.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves isn’t more information.
It’s a little more imagination.
πΏ My Story β€οΈ
As an English teacher, books were naturally part of my everyday life.
I spent years introducing students to stories that challenged them, inspired them, and sometimes even changed the way they saw the world.
One of the greatest gifts I hoped to pass along wasn’t simply a love of literature.
It was a love of reading itself.
Reading invites us to slow down.
To wonder.
To imagine.
To see life through someone else’s eyes.
Even now, after retirement, there’s something wonderfully comforting about ending the day with a good book instead of another screen.
Some evenings I read only a few pages.
Other nights I lose track of time because the story has drawn me in.
Either way, I almost always sleep a little better afterward.
Books have a quiet way of settling both the mind and the heart.

πΏ Why Reading Before Bed Helps
Research continues to suggest that reading before bed offers benefits that go far beyond entertainment.
A bedtime reading habit may help:
πΏ Reduce stress and anxiety
πΏ Improve sleep quality
πΏ Increase empathy and emotional well-being
πΏ Strengthen memory and concentration
πΏ Encourage lifelong learning
Unlike scrolling through social media, reading gently encourages our minds to slow their pace.
The pages don’t compete for our attention.
They simply invite us to turn one more page.
Sometimes that’s exactly what we need after a busy day.
πΏ This Week’s Small Habit
This week, create a simple bedtime reading ritual.
Choose a book you’ve been meaning to read.
Turn off your phone fifteen minutes before bed.
Make a cup of tea or settle into your favorite chair.
Then simply read.
Don’t worry about finishing a chapter.
Don’t worry about reading quickly.
Just enjoy the quiet.
You might discover that those few peaceful minutes become your favorite part of the day.
πΏ A Few Things I’m Loving
π A beautifully written inspirational book
What I love about these books is that even a few pages can leave you feeling encouraged before the day comes to an end.
π A beautiful reading journal
What I love about a reading journal is having one place to record favorite books, meaningful quotes, and reflections you’ll enjoy revisiting.
β A favorite ceramic mug
There’s something about wrapping your hands around a warm mug that makes reading feel even more relaxing.
π―οΈ A softly scented candle
Soft lighting and a calming fragrance create a peaceful atmosphere that helps signal it’s time to unwind.
ποΈ A cozy knit throw blanket
My favorite reading companion. It’s impossible not to feel relaxed when you’re curled up with a good book and a soft blanket.
